it says berashis bar elokim es haaretz, acording to chasidus elokim is one of the last tzimztumim and if so wasnt created until the world was at least in the middle of creation, so if so what is the meaning of the posuk? when was elokim created? trough which tzimztum was the world created? a new baal tshuva who started learning chasidus asked me this question i didn't have a such a clear answer for him if anyone can clear this up for me i would be very happy thanks

Sigh. You should tell this Baal Teshuva that he really should not be learning this stuff. I can easily tell from your post that this person has been learning this from Lubavitchers. They are the only ones will refer to generic Judaic teachings as "Chasidus" if it happens to be brought down in Tanya or another one of their seforim. They are also the only group of peopel who would so stupidly teach a starting Baal Teshuva these things.

In any case, one of the big problems with Lubavitch is that they teach advanced and even Kabalistic concepts - yes, including a lot of what is written in the Tanya - to people who do not have the background to understand it properly. This leads to mistakes and distortions in your understandign of essential Jewish concepts, and its a large part of what made Chabad vulnerable to the insane Meshichist (and worse!) beliefs that they are running around with today - something that no other group of Orthodox Jews could ever fall victim to.

Please tell your Baal Teshuva friend that he has to learn to walk before he runs. And although jumping your racing car over Grand Canyon gorges is wildly exciting, if you try to do it before you know how to use a gas pedal youre going to kill yourself.

And therefore, he should stop trying to digest stuff such like Tzimtzumim and phases of creation, and start learning something like Chumash-Rashi. If he wants Jewish Hashkafa you should tell him to read Rabbi Miller's books, or if he wants classics, the Ramchal's Derech Hashem, or somethign along those lines.

Rav Moderator,
I was just wondering,
do you believe in the baal hatanya or not?
Because if you do...according to him...our generation DESPERATELY NEEDS chassidus to be taught...especially to baal teshuvos.
This is one the special preparations before moshiach.
Do you think the Alter Rebbe wrote the Tanya and had it printed for special people?
Just wondering....
Hashem should bentch us all to see the pure emes begaloi

The Baal HaTanya never said or held any such thing.

well..yes. you're gettign into areas that no human can understand. does anyone know of a commentary on Bereishis that would help (maybe Meam Loez? it's probably too kabbalistic and even more confusing. meanwhile, read R' Miller's Sefarim and the threads on the world's creation in the Basic Judaism forum.)
